Our Presbyterian Heritage
Hope Congregation stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, carrying forward the Reformed tradition established by the Basel Mission in 1828.
From Basel Mission to Hope
The Presbyterian Church of Ghana traces its roots to 1828 when Basel Mission Society missionaries first arrived in Ghana. This rich heritage of Reformed theology and community service flows through every aspect of our congregation.
Hope Congregation's story began in June 1989 with the development of Sakumono Estates. A dedicated planning committee including Mrs. Shormeh Gyamfi-Aidoo, Mr. Isaac Akesseh, Mr. Seth Terkper, and others worked tirelessly to establish a Presbyterian presence in the new community.
Our first meeting was held on December 29, 1990, with 25 committed members. The first church service took place on February 17, 1991, with 64 worshippers gathering in humble faith. We were officially named “Presbyterian Church of Hope” on October 27, 1991, and inaugurated on February 18, 1992.
Under the faithful ministry of Rev. Erasmus N. B. Odonkor (1994-2021) for 27 years, we've grown from those humble beginnings to a thriving congregation of over 1000 members, guided by our scripture: “So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth” (1 Corinthians 3:7-9).
